   About the LA Internship Program  

Mission

The Los Angeles Program is dedicated to providing participants a hands-on experience in the entertainment capitol of the world. In addition to living in one of the most dynamic and diverse cities in the world, participants have the opportunity to explore their interests in the ever evolving and expanding entertainment industry. Through dialogues, discussions, experiential learning/internships in film, television, advertising, marketing, special events, media and politics, participants in the LA Program learn first-hand the challenges and opportunities from leaders in the industry, business and government. After the program's enriching experiences, participants are equipped with an enlightened perspective on career paths as well as an emerging network of industry contacts.

Overview of the Program

The highly praised program is based in the entertainment capitol of the world, Los Angeles. Up to 12 undergraduate and graduate credits (per each individual's university/college’s approval) as well as experiential learning provides students memorable professional experience, while also securing valuable, long lasting mentors. It also provides rich intercultural experiences in preparing students for leadership in the global village.

Programs have included students from the U.S., Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Previous students were enrolled at Harvard University, Elmira College, University of Barcelona Blanquerna-Ramon Llull University (Spain), King Saud University (Saudi Arabia), Northeastern University, Lake Erie College, Emerson College, Bentley College, Suffolk University and University of Missouri.

Alums of the LA Program have gone on to enjoy success. Hannah Bailey of the 2007 program is currently starring in the award winning documentary “American Teen.” Other LA Program alums have been hired in marketing, public relations, public diplomacy and government in Boston, New York, Washington, London and Barcelona.

THE CLASSROOM
The Los Angeles Program offers a unique learning experience in Los Angeles, the entertainment capital of the world and the Gateway to the Pacific Rim. One of the best known cities in America, Los Angeles is surrounded with beauty, the pristine Pacific Ocean on the west border and the Santa Gabriel Mountains to the east. Classes will be held at Oakwood, located blocks away from Warner Brothers, Universal and NBC. Rich in history, culture and beauty, Los Angeles’s attractions and landmarks will also be the classroom for students’ learning and experiences.

THE EXPERIENCE
The typical program offers students up to 12 credits of undergraduate or graduate coursework in areas including: media, public relations, marketing, advertising, corporate/business communication, political communication, film and tv. Students will experience firsthand the culture and landmarks of Los Angeles while experiencing the internship environment and taking classes with experienced academics and professionals in the industry. Students gain an appreciation of Los Angeles, a city many describe as the prototype of the next century, with its diverse cultures and promise.

Students of the program will also have the opportunity to make a short documentary of their experience with camera and editing equipment provided by the LA Program through an affiliation with Campus Movie Fest.

In addition to the hands-on academic experience in the workplace, students will have special tours which may include NBC, Paramount, Disney and Universal Studios, Catalina Island, San Diego, and Baja Mexico (NOTE: Students interested in visiting Mexico should have a valid passport. Non-US students should check with their individual embassy or consulate on travel restrictions.). They will have VIP lectures with industry leaders in entertainment, marketing, public relations, media, politics, film and television.

The LA Program also has collaborated with the City of Rosarito and Campus Movie Fest in sponsoring the Rosarito Student Film Festival each summer, beginning in 2007. Student from Rosarito work with LA Program students and our guest Film In Resident Executive Director, Michael McManus, in an intensive one week program designed to reach all involved the art of film making, Some of these films have been presented at international fillm festivals and conferences. (Post the films) In honor of David P. Twomey III, a board member of the LA Program who passed away at the age of 26, July, 2009, a special creativity award will be given in David's honor each year

The Los Angeles Program's staff is comprised of academic, industry and business professionals with outstanding credentials and leadership in their areas of expertise.

FINANCIAL INFORMATION

• LA Program 2010
July 11 - August 18 - $6000
(transportation to and from LA is the responsibility of the student)

The cost of the program includes:
• Housing
• To and from the airport
• To and from the internship location (LA Program exclusive!)
• All scheduled excursions (travel, and food costs for the day) **
• A welcome and farewell dinner

Individual participants will be responsible for: ***
Round-trip airfare
• Medical insurance (mandatory)
• Personal spending money
• Meals

* Price given reflects a standard pricing for the 6 weeks program held during Summer. The LA Program reserves the right to change the final price prior to the start of a program session and will make every effort to update changes in base pricing or additional surcharges to interested participants prior to a deposit being taken.

** Some optional excursions may be offered at additional cost

*** If you are attending the program for credit your university/college will provide your class and internship credit at the usual cost.

HOW TO APPLY
To apply for to the LA Program, you will need:

• A completed application (available to download on this website)
• A resume must be submitted after acceptance into the program
• Two letters of recommendation from faculty
• A phone interview with the resident director
• Once accepted to the program students must submit a $1,000.00 non-refundable, non-transferable deposit to secure enrollment at the time of admission. Full payment is due one month prior to the beginning of the program session.

 

The Program reserves the right to withdraw this offering if it fails to generate sufficient enrollment. Participants should be guided by this policy when making travel arrangements.
